Arrival of Moritz Gräfe, ESR2 at University of Stuttgart

Moritz, ESR of USTUTT, embarked in the FLOAWER project in November. He's dedicating his time and work around "Assessing the measurements of offshore wind conditions using LiDAR on floating platforms for resource assessment and power curve verification" for the next 36 months.

After growing up in Germany Moritz studied Mechanical Engineering in Austria and Renewable Energy Engineering in the UK. Later he worked in the offshore wind industry with a focus on research in the field of O&M and reliability engineering. In his free time Moritz enjoys to be in the nature for running or hiking. Whenever possible he uses the power of the wind for sailing trips all around Europe.

When asked about his motivation, Moritz declared:

Since the coming of large scale wind turbines for electricity production I am fascinated by the technology and the idea of sustainable energy supply powered by the wind. Luckily I had the chance be part of the wind energy research community during my academic and professional career. FLOAWER project is the ideal opportunity to intensify the knowledge and contribute to current developments in this exciting field. Especially Floating Offshore Wind Turbines offer great potential to unlock offshore wind resources in deep waters but do also come with new challenges. Costs need to be decreased significantly while keeping the impact on the marine environment low. My project will focus on the usage of floating LiDAR devices for applications like wind resource assessment and power curve verification. However, one advantage of FLOAWER project is the multi-disciplinary approach which provides a bigger picture of Floating Wind Energy and strong network from academia and industry. I am looking forward to three exciting years in this project!
